>"unknown, now-extinct hominins"
Chimpanzees. Deka and Rienzi published a paper on this in the American Journal of Human Genetics back around 1994. Some West African Bantu populations carry up to 8% chimpanzee genes, by which they mean genes only found in chimpanzees and in those populations, nowhere else. It was, of course, dropped down the Memory Hole instantly and has been scrubbed from the Internet very thoroughly. I am trying to find a few screenshots that reference it. All the AIs now insist no such paper was ever published. Some say Rienzi never existed. Others admit to his existence but say the name is a "pseudonym" and he was "not a real scientist" and want to argue with me about it. I know it existed and I remember seeing it brought up with some frequency in certain places in the pre-AI, pre-SEO Internet.
I am not sure Averi would be improved by the addition of chimpanzee DNA, personally.
