Still, she's rather obscure outside of a couple of boards and there are few artworks preserved and catalogued, so it's trivial to imagine someone visiting imageboards for years without encountering her once, or just automatically filtering her out assuming that's another human.

No one cares, but she's a fox version of a character from a Chinese cartoon called "Rozen Maiden."  RM was a yuge phenomenon at 4chins then, especially /b/, and it spawned OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAND memes, all of which are now forgotten other than Furseiseki.  It may be just as well.
